Elizabeth regarded me with a long, hard stare. Her usual smile had faded, only to be replaced with a frown that did not suit her pretty features. She blinked a time or two before leaning in closer to me.
âYou chose your words carefully,â she said. âI imagine that is because he did not truly kill anyone?â
My head tilted as I gazed upon her with a renewed appreciation. âThat is what you took from what I said?â I asked.
âWell, yes,â she said, somewhat annoyed. âDid you assume I would have balked at your statement? Fled in horror? Demanded that you and he leave at once?â
âI did not know what you might do,â I admitted. âI certainly did not expect you to take it as well as you have.â
She straightened, elevating her chin. âYou said that he had been accused of murder, not that he had committed murder,â she said, folding her arms. âAnyone with a lick of sense would have realized what that meant.â
âSo, you believe me?â I asked.
âWhy in the world would I have reason not to believe you?â she asked, furrowing her brow at me. âYou have never proven yourself untrustworthy, and if you believe that he has not done anything, then I would be a fool to ignore your belief.â
âYou are a good friend, Elizabeth, and far too kind,â I said.
âYes, wellâ¦I can understand now why you were reluctant to tell me,â she said, leaning back in her seat. âMurder is not a light matter, is it?â
âAnything but,â I finished for her with a sigh.
âHow did this happen?â she asked. âDid he come out and tell you?â
âNo,â I said. âI learned the truth for myself and then confronted him about it.â
âHow?â she asked.
âWellâ¦â I said. âI suppose I should start at the beginning of this whole mess. I told you about how my uncle was killed, yes? Well, the night he died, amidst the chaos, I ran outside and bumped into Miles. I was chasing after someone I had seen fleeing the building, trying to catch a glimpse of the man, and Miles happened to be standing out in the alleyway. I thought him no more than a vagrant, yet he took off after the man without question. He surprised me with his charming demeanor and well-spoken manner. Moreover, he was obviously a person with very useful skills. In a fit of insanity, I invited him to work for my family.â
âAnd so that is how all that happened,â she said. âI had wanted to ask, but had not yet gotten around to it.â
âIndeed,â I said. âI quickly learned that he had a keen eye for finding information, and as such, after hiring him as our butler, I put him to work helping me find the man who killed my uncle.â
âThat is truly fascinating,â she said, eyes widening. âWhat in the world are the chances?â
There was a knock at the door, and my heart leapt into my throat.
A servant peered into the room. âMy lady? Would you and Miss Sylvia care for some tea before lunch?â
âThank you, William, that would be fine,â she said.
